Maryann Bracken‘s Chair Yoga Class. The 45-minute (virtual) classes are held most Mondays at 10:30 am. Link will be sent to registered participants before the class. Maryann‘s online yoga practice involves gentle movements that help increase flexibility and coordination, improve balance and the ability to bend, twist and move more freely. They may also help with pain management and result in better sleep. We practice while sitting in a chair and standing while holding on to the back of the chair for balance. For those with limitations it is not necessary to practice all the movements. Please have a chair without arms, and one that allows you to place your feet flat on the floor. Contact Maryann Bracken at: mabfilkins@gmail.com for the Zoom link. Link will be sent to registered participants before the class. Free for Village members, $10 to the Village for non-members. Please register by Sun January 26th. Call 203-747-5939 or email to info@ShorelineVillageCT.org.

When: Monday, January 27 from 3:00 to 5:00 PM Where: Guilford Community Center, Faulkner Room on 2nd Floor With: Kate Let’s continue to sharpen our quills and our minds. Stirring memories of yore is an excellent practice to keep our neurons challenged. And remember the expert advice our expert advisor, Toby Armour, gave us in September: “Write, write every day, for a few minutes, or more, write…” Following Toby’s advice, pick up your quill, any time of the day, on the spur of a moment, write, write a thought, a word, a sentence, write daily… Simple directions. We had promised to try… Please register at 203-747-5939 or info@ShorelineVillageCT.org

By: The Metropolitan Opera “Live in HD” When: Wednesday, January 29 from 1:00 to 4-4:30 Where: Madison Cinemas 2, 761 Boston Post Road, Madison With: Georges Synopsis: The Egyptians have captured and enslaved Aida, an Ethiopian princess. An Egyptian military commander, Radamès, struggles to choose between his love for her and his loyalty to the King of Egypt. Aida is a tragic opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni. Set in the Old Kingdom of Egypt, it was commissioned by Cairo‘s Khedivial Opera House and had its première there on 24 December 1871, in a performance conducted by Giovanni Bottesini. Michael Mayer’s spectacular new production premiered December 31with a splendid cast: Soprano Angel Joy Blue, Baritone Quinn Kelsey. Director Yannick Nezet-Seguin conducts. You need not be an opera devotee to enjoy this opera. It is a story based on a scenario by French Egyptologist Auguste Mariette. Verdi perceived the themes of Love and Patriotism as perfect source of musical inspiration. Let’s start the year with Musical Wonder and Grandeur! Note: George will send out additional info about the possibility of a post-opera coffee pause… Tickets can be bought at www.madisoncinemas2.com

The classes are free to members—a monthly fee of $10 for non-members is requested. Note: New students are requested to register (see below) to receive the link to this class. A little reminder about Yoga: In addition to attending your yoga classes, remember to practice all the asanas (always finding your Drishti*) you have learned with Maryann, as well as the 3-phase pranayama technique: Inhale 1-2-3, Hold 1-2-3-4, Exhale 1-2-3-4-5 (or longer if it feels comfortable). This breathing practice will manage the flow of energy within your body. Another important Maryann recommendation: Strengthen your Core. A good example: Repeated Sit-to-Stand (and sit again!) exercises—those are important for your general well-being. * Drishti: A soft, focused gaze that is used to enhance concentration and direct attention to the inner experience. Please register by Feb 2nd. Call 203-747-5939 or email to info@ShorelineVillageCT.org.

Date/Time: Tuesday, February 4 at 11:00 Title: THE BEE STING Author: Paul Murray Moderator: Martha Hutchinson “An irresistibly funny, thought-provoking tour de force about family, fortune, and the struggle to be a good person when the world is falling apart.” The Barnes family is in trouble. Dickie’s oncespending his days in the woods, building an apocalypse-proof bunker with a renegade handyman. His wife, Imelda, is selling off her jewelry on eBay and half-heartedly dodging the attention of fasttalking cattle farmer Big Mike, while their teenage daughter, Cass, formerly top of her class, seems determined to binge drink her way through her final exams. As for twelve-year-old PJ, he’s on the brink of running away. George added: “Its blend of humor, poignancy, and thought-provoking themes ensures engaging conversations for our Shoreline Village virtual Book Group. It is an intricate family drama with rich character development. Join the conversation if you appreciate character-driven narratives that blend humor with serious social commentary in a contemporary family setting.” Call 203-747-5939 or email to info@ShorelineVillageCT.org to receive the Zoom link for this program.
