You Are Invited to a Walking Tour of Memorable Downtown Madison Moments at 10:00 AM on July 29th. Starting in front of 12 School Street, the yellow Madison Town Information Center. Enjoy a guided walking tour of historic downtown Madison that will transform your perception of its seemingly quiet streets and buildings. From the sidewalk, discover where Daniel Hand, a devoted abolitionist and philanthropist, once trod. Pause outside the house where the preacher, Yale’s first graduate, freed his enslaved servants. Glimpse homes rumored to be haunted and hear the chilling tales behind their facades. Stand above the basement where the city’s sensational “trial of the century” took place. This walk, sponsored by the Guilford Preservation Alliance, is a wonderful opportunity to discover 386 years of Guilford’s fascinating history since its founding in 1639. The history of the Town Green and many of the surrounding homes and businesses is highlighted. Learn about the Native Americans, New England slavery, how Guilford is connected to the saving of the Connecticut Charter (1687), the Salem Witch Trials (1692), and the Statue of Liberty (1886). Other entertaining historical stories are added, making for a memorable and entertaining morning. Dave and Debbie Meeker are leading the tour. Debbie is descended from 9 Signers of the Guilford Covenant. They enjoy sharing stories that include family history and other stories about the early residents of Guilford, and they love to hear your stories. Questions?
