Keeping Your World Steady: How the Inner Ear Impacts Balance and Falls.
Presentation at the Scranton Library Johnson Community Room by Taylor Mayberry, PT, DPT, MSBS.
Falls are a leading cause of injury and loss of independence among older adults, yet many people are unaware of the critical role the inner ear plays in maintaining balance. This informative presentation explores the vestibular system—the body‘s hidden balance center—and how it works together with vision and sensation from the muscles and joints to keep us steady and safe. Participants will learn about age-related changes that can affect balance, recognize common symptoms such as dizziness and unsteadiness, and understand how these issues can increase fall risk. The lecture will also highlight practical prevention strategies, including vestibular rehabilitation, strength training, and home safety modifications, empowering attendees to take proactive steps toward reducing falls and maintaining an active, independent lifestyle.
